Scholars share their voices through EPIC Theatre monologues

Through the unique Ethnic Studies Monologue program, scholars from Decatur, Federal Way, Thomas Jefferson and Todd Beamer high schools engaged in a residency workshop with EPIC Theatre Ensemble to delve into the diverse perspectives of social movements. Over the course of the workshop, scholars created powerful monologues as they honed their skills in storytelling, delved into important themes surrounding activism and social justice, and utilized emotive language to convey the raw emotions of those involved in these movements, and their own feelings as well.

By exploring different viewpoints and narratives, students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of activism, social change, and the importance of empathy and consideration creating the future they want to see.

To cap off the experience, residency sponsor Federal Way Center Stage Theatre hosted the students, providing a platform for them to present their monologues on a stage in front of their peers. Whether the monologue focused on historical or contemporary events or movements, the students transformed them into something personal and poured themselves into their performances.

FWPS staff Amanda Christensen was thrilled to see the students up on the stage and hear them, saying, “what we saw today went far beyond just performances – these students shared pieces of themselves through incredibly brave storytelling. The way they opened up and showed such genuine emotion really built bridges of understanding and empathy. I'm just so moved by their courage, and I know these powerful voices are going to create change in our community."

The immersive and transformative experience expanded their understanding of social movements while empowering them to become agents of change in their communities and beyond. This activity is one way scholars are becoming engaged, empowered critical thinkers, and FWPS is proud of the work scholars and staff put in to make it a success.
